5 Maker Podcasts You Should Listen to

Ever heard the saying, “‘You are what you listen to’”? We feel the best way to stay inspired to keep doing what you love, is to listen to others sharing their similar journeys. Here is a short list of some of our favorite Podcasts, hosted by makers for makers (from woodworking, blacksmithing, sewing, ceramics, DIY etc.). Discover a world full of different artists sharing their experiences and telling their stories with other like-minded creatives.

1. Make Ideas Reality

Hosted by Justin White @garageavenger an extremely talented maker of many things. His podcast Make Ideas Reality is dedicated to every day creative hero's. His main goal of the podcast is to inspire people with stories that will give them courage to leave their comfort zone, to think big, and to “be the bad-ass creator you were meant to be”.

This channel in our opinion is the perfect balance between fun and serious. Justin does his research in respect to his guests, carefully asking meaningful questions that tend to result in both positive, encouraging mind-awakenings and a sh** load of belly laughs! He has had on a great number of talented makers including Eric from @handtoolrescue, Gus Dixon of @mancavemakings and Bernie Solo @worksbysolo to name a few. — Click to listen on Apple Podcasts | You can watch our interview Episode 29 plsmithed on YouTube.

2. Making Problems to Solve

Hosted by the great Dave Bauer @davebauerart @makingproblemstosolve is a great space to discover “the background behind the confidence of curiosity.” Dave effortlessly guides everyone in, out and around all the different types of problems life brings (and many ways to solve them). What starts as a get-know-you as the maker, slowly turns into how many problems we as makers are faced with daily, whether in or outside a creative space.

Topics of family, childhood and much more come into play, allowing you as the listener to understand better all of the history and mind molding behind the work they do. You couldn’t ask for a more motivating podcast where most of what you hear is relatable leaving you feeling understood as a person. — Make sure to check out Episode 27 with Andrew Burke @burkemakesstuff , Episode 23 with Keith Decent @keithdecent , and Episode 8 with Marylou G Anderson @madeby_marylou .

3. Making Our Way Podcast

@makingourwaypodcast Hosted by Christy of @twistedtwinewoodworking , Austin of @highcalibercraftsmanbuilds , and Dean of @dean_duplantis . These three tastefully collaborate when interviewing their guests. Their main goal is to dive deeper into the specific projects and creative process of the maker sharing. It is a fabulously direct way to gain more details on what the maker is experiencing, learning and processing (speaking straight from the heart, on the spot).

What we love most is how they tailor the conversation to hit various valuable information that listeners can benefit from, that can otherwise get lost in other podcasts (where conversations tend to go in circles). We highly recommend Episode 83 with Justin Mabie @_callmemabie_ , Episode 62 with Brandy Aubé @brandy.studioaube and Episode 79 to learn all about the amazing Catskill Mountain Maker Camp @themakercamp.
— Click here to listen on Apple Podcasts. There you can also find plsmithed interview Episode 3.

4. Clamp Cast

@clampcast Hosted by @the_grant_alexander , @makermackey and @jessyratfink . These three are an eclectic gang coming together from Canada, the US and Australia. Together they tackle topics regarding all aspects of the maker life. They highlight a variety of crafts, whether it be woodworking, leather-working, or digital fabrication they tap into whatever it is that gets the maker inspired.

What we like about this channel is the laidback flow. You somehow feel like you’re there together hanging out on the couch, yet in reality you’re all spread across the globe. While they aim to interview and highlight the one individual, you also get to know each of them a little more every episode. — You don’t want to miss Episode 130 with Brett Mcafee @skullandspade13 , Episode 128 with Stephanie of @uncommonoutpost and Episode 127 with Chris Griffrow @cowdogcraftworks . — Visit their website to learn more and listen to the podcast.

5. The Full Blast Podcast

@thefullblastpodcast Hosted by Geoff Feder of @federknives. Geoff is a fantastic host and does an incredible job interviewing people in a way like no one else. The questions he asks aren’t your everyday most-common asked and the conversation flows seamlessly. His channel leans more toward the formal side one might say. However there is some joking around and lots of laughs, with the tone mainly set by the interviewee.

It’s not necessarily about making things as much it is about the guest sharing who they are; past, present and future. What we love most is all the good that comes out of the conversations allowing the listener to learn much more about the maker you would’ve never known if you didn’t listen — Always keeping us on our toes and coming back for more (I don’t think we’ve missed one yet). We recommend Episode 135 with Jimmy DiResta @jimmydiresta , Episode 69 with Leah Aripotch @leaharipotch , and Episode 117 with Mark Peacock @deer_river_craftsman . Click to listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts.

In many ways the five channels share some similarities yet are each wildly different. We find it equally refreshing to learn more about makers we already know, as it is to discover new ones. After sometime we’ve come to see that as creatives we are alike with a strong connection and that a wonderful part of this community is that no certain number of followers can take that away.

Happy listening!
